Chief Catrina A. Thompson is a 25-year veteran of the Winston-Salem Police Department, starting her career in January of 1994 where she was elected by her peers as president of Basic Law Enforcement Training (BLET) Class 34. Chief Thompson has served in the Patrol Division, Recruiting Unit, Training Division and The Criminal Investigation Division. She is also one of the Commanders of the department’s Crisis/Hostage Negotiation Team. As an Assistant Chief, she served as Commander of the Investigative Services Bureau, overseeing the investigation of major crimes in Winston-Salem.
In 2004, Chief Thompson was selected by Reynolda Rotary Club to represent the City of Winston-Salem and the Winston-Salem Police Department on a Group Study Exchange Program to Mexico. She visited 12 cities in 28 days, touring various law enforcement agencies, developing personal and professional relationships and promoting peace and good will.
Chief Thompson is the President of the Board of Directors for the Mental Health Association of Forsyth County and she is dedicated to advancing the organization’s mission of improving the quality of life for persons affected by mental illness through advocacy, education and support services. She was one of the first Winston-Salem Police Officers to receive Crisis Intervention Training (CIT). The training is provided by the Mental Health Association of Forsyth County and is developed to help first responders react appropriately to situations involving citizens experiencing mental health crisis or developmental disabilities.
Chief Catrina A.Thompson earned a Bachelor’s of Science Degree in Criminal Justice from Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan and a Master’s Degree in Public Administration from Appalachian State University. She is a graduate of Police Leadership Development Institute (PLDI), West Point Leadership Program (WPLP) and the FBI Law Enforcement Executive Development Association (FBI-LEEDA) where she earned the Trilogy Award. Chief Thompson is also a member of Leadership Winston-Salem Class of 2016.
Chief Thompson is married to Alonzo Thompson and the couple has two children.
