Bike Route Maps
In 2007 the City of Winston-Salem contracted with Toole Design Group to review and update the original bike route plan from the late 1980s. These routes were designed to follow streets/roads with less traffic and a more friendly terrain for cycling. Currently Routes 4 and 5 are signed.

Great Bike Rides In and Around Winston-Salem (CD-ROM)
Inspired by the interest in Bike South 2000, Judi Wallace and Ken Putnam compiled a guide that offers 59 bike routes in the Winston-Salem area. All routes start in Winston-Salem and loop into the surrounding counties of Davie, Davidson, Forsyth, Iredell, Stokes, Surry, and Yadkin. They range in length from 15 miles to 75 miles, offering choices for all cycling abilities. Although most of the rides are designed for road biking, off-road trails for mountain bikers are included. There is also a section for family rides.
Each route includes a mile-by-mile description, with turns and landmarks indicated; a narrative description of what the cyclist will see along the route; a detailed map of the route; a summary of route information, including distance, type of terrain, traffic conditions, noteworthy hazards, and location of food sources and rest rooms; and photos of sites along the route.
Paperback copies of the book are available for online purchase at Amazon (opens in a new window). An updated version of the book on CD-ROM is also available from Ken’s Bike Shop (opens in a new window), either through purchase at the store or through an order form on the website.
