A special curriculum for North Carolina called “Let’s Go NC!” includes five lesson plans and videos for students in grades K-5 covering these topics:
- Where to walk
- How to cross streets
- Crossing intersections
- School bus safety
- Parking lot safety
Each lesson also includes a take-home sheet for parents/guardians and an end-of-lesson assessment. Endorsed by the NC Department of Public Instruction, this curriculum is available free of charge online for use in classrooms as well as with other youth-oriented groups.
Using funds from a Safe Routes to School grant, the Winston-Salem Safe Routes to School Program through the City of Winston-Salem purchased a trailer, 26 bicycles and helmets that Winston-Salem/Forsyth County elementary and middle schools could use to teach biking skills to students. Safe Routes to School Coordinator Judi Wallace developed a Bike Smarts curriculum tailored to the needs and schedule of local schools. Judi with Bicycle & Pedestrian Coordinator Matthew Burczyk trained all elementary and middle school teachers in WS/FC Schools to teach the Bike Smarts curriculum in their physical education classes, with particular focus on fourth and sixth grade students.
