Community Emergency Response Team

Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) is a program that educates people about disaster preparedness for hazards that may impact their area and trains them in basic disaster response skills. Teams are made up of citizens who are trained by emergency service professionals to respond, within their community, to local disaster situations.

CERT is a program of Citizen Corps. It allows citizens the opportunity to tap into the Amercian spirit of volunteerism, and participate in the preparedness, response, and recovery efforts of an emergency or disaster.

Disasters can severely restrict and overwhelm emergency response resources and leave communities cut off from outside emergency support.  CERT's are trained to take care of themselves and help others in their communities for the first three days following a disaster.
