Emergency Preparedness Night with the Warthogs

N.C. Citizen Corps Award-Winning Event

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security has designated September as National Preparedness Month.  In an effort to promote National Preparedness Month, the Forsyth County Local Emergency Planning Committee (LEPC) and Citizen Corps Council will be sponsoring Emergency Preparedness Night 2008 with the Winston-Salem Warthogs at Historic Ernie Shore Field on Friday, August 22.

The event will emphasize the importance of disaster/emergency preparedness, and it will be recognized by the Department of Homeland Security. There will be many emergency vehicles on display along with their personnel including:

  • a fire safety house
  • Smokey the Bear
  • Sparky the Firedog
  • fire trucks
  • rescue vehicles
  • utility trucks
  • law enforcement patrol cars
  • Highway Patrol rollover simulator
  • animal rescue equipment
  • command vehicles
  • and much more!

There will also be an exhibition softball game beginning at 6:00 p.m. between fire fighters (the FIRE DOGS) and law enforcement officers (the CRIME DOGS).  Please see the attachment below for a list of the participating agencies.

The Winston-Salem Warthogs vs. Myrtle Beach Pelicans baseball game will begin at 7:00 p.m. with activities between innings.  Fireworks will follow the game.  People of all ages will enjoy this event and will gain valuable information about emergency preparedness.  This will be the last Warthogs game at Ernie Shore Field.

Each individual should make it a priority to prepare for potential emergencies and disasters.  Forsyth County, N.C., is susceptible to severe weather (hurricanes, thunderstorms, tornados, floods and winter storms), hazardous materials incidents, large fires, and possible terrorist attacks.  Disaster awareness and planning can save time, resources, money, and most importantly, lives.

During disasters, local emergency responders may be overwhelmed, and citizens must accept responsibility of their own safety and survival, without assistance from others, for a period of up to three days.

  • Get an Emergency Supply Kit
  • Make a Family Emergency Plan
  • Be informed about the different types of emergencies and their appropriate responses
  • Get involved

We are taking steps as an organization to become educated, trained and better prepared, and we urge you to take time to do the same at home.  There are simple steps you can take to prepare yourself and your family.  For more information, please visit Ready North Carolina.
