PLAN STATUS- Adopted. The City-County Planning Board held a public hearing and recommended adoption of the Southwest Suburban Area Plan in June 2008. The Winston-Salem City Council adopted the Plan in August 2008 and the Forsyth County Commissioners adopted the Plan in January 2009. |

The City-County Planning Board staff, along with a Citizens' Advisory Committee, has completed a plan to guide future land use and public investment decisions in southwest Winston-Salem and Forsyth County. The Southwest Suburban Area Plan includes recommendations for land use, transportation, community facilities, design and appearance, historic preservation, and economic development.

Boundaries of the Study Area
The Southwest Suburban Planning Area encompasses approximately 13,292 acres of land. The planning area is generally bounded on the north by Business 40 and Silas Creek Parkway; on the east by Ebert Road; on the south by the county boundary; and on the west by Muddy Creek. Approximately 60% of the area is in Winston-Salem. The remainder is in unincorporated Forsyth County. |
Land Use Plan Recommendations
- Developing Mixed-Use Opportunity Areas at Hanes Mall, Jonestown Road/Kester Mill Road,and Stratford Road/Burke Mill Road
- Developing Stratford Road Metro Activity center and Transit-Oriented Development Area at Stratford and Vest Mill Roads
- Allowing existing homes to convert to office uses in identified locations Creating community- and neighborhood-serving Activity Centers at Hillcrest/Somerset Road and Clemmonsville/Ebert Roads
- Allowing for additional industrial growth south of Clemmonsville Road
Other Recommendations
- Improving accessibility in the area with the proposed Stratford/Ebert Connector Road and proposed Peace Haven/Styers Ferry Connector Road
- Develop greenways along Litte Creek, Burke Creek and Salem Creek
- Create new recreation areas at identified potential park locations
- Complete historic studies on the Hope/Fraternity Church and Jonestown Road areas
- Pursue identified sites for new elementary, middle and high schools
