Halloween Safety

With the upcoming Halloween holiday, the Winston-Salem Police Department would like to remind you of a few safety tips to make your Halloween a safe and fun-filled event.

  • Avoid contumes that are too loose or too tight.
  • The costume should be made of a fire resistant material.
  • Carry a flashlight and wear reflective tape on your costume and/or candy bag.
  • Plan your trip ahead, and do not travel alone.
  • When you are out, remember to use the sidewalks and always stay in your group.
  • Complete a count of everyone in your group.  Frequently recount your group to be sure that you have everyone.
  • Only travel into neighborhoods that you know.
  • Consider other alternatives
    • Churches
    • The Mall
    • Community Centers
    • Hospitals
  • Once you return home, inspect all treats.
  • Discard fruits unless they are from a trusted person.
  • If candy is unwrapped, throw it away.

The National Center for Missing and Exploited Children has more information regarding Halloween safety.
