Assistant Chief  L.O. Saunders

Assistant Police Chief Louis Saunders started his career with the Winston-Salem Police Department in 1981 as a Public Safety Officer. 

Assistant Chief Saunders was promoted to Senior Police Officer in 1988, Sergeant in 1991, Lieutenant in 1996 and Captain in 2001. He was appointed to the rank of Assistant Police Chief on March 1, 2004. 


Assistant Chief Saunders has served the Department in the Patrol Division, Detective Division, Operations Support Division, and as Commander of the Professional Standards Division. He is a 1976 graduate of North Carolina A & T State University where he received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Administration. He is a 1998 graduate of the North Carolina State University Administrative Officers Management Program and a 2003 graduate of Leadership Winston-Salem. He holds an Advanced Law Enforcement Certificate and is a Certified General Instructor.
