Public Art Commission Selects Sculpture for Central Library
The Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Public Art Commission, in consultation with Forsyth Public Library officials, has selected "Timeless Purpose," an original sculpture proposed by Deedee Morrison of Birmingham, Ala., for the public art feature at the new Forsyth County Central Library in downtown Winston-Salem. Morrison’s proposal is for a giant book on an easel. The text would be cut out of the face of the pages and the sculpture would be lit from within so that the lettering of the text would be illuminated at night and spill light into the area surrounding the sculpture. City to Assist Residential Project on Fourth Street
The City Council has agreed to assist a residential and retail project on Fourth Street as part of a larger project that involves the old GMAC building. Grubb Properties has announced plans to build a $48 million residential and retail project on the site just south of the GMAC building, including the surface parking lot. The project will include 240 apartments and storefronts along Fourth Street. Grubb Properties has committed to making 30 percent of the units workforce housing.
The residential project will involve the removal of an existing six-story building. The city of Winston-Salem will assist with the cost of removing the building by returning 75 percent of the annual new taxes paid on the residential project for a period of 10 years. In tandem with this project, local businessman Don Flow will buy the GMAC building to relocate all Flow Companies corporate services that are currently housed in locations throughout North Carolina and Virginia. The city is not assisting with the GMAC portion of the project. READ MORE
